Introduction
The Covid-19 disaster has spread all around the world. Although some countries have controlled the virus successfully, there are still many countries suffering from the disaster. Many countries shut down their factories and companies, closed schools and markets, and blocked access to their cities to prevent the propagation of the coronavirus. The temporary closure of these organizations has affected economic development processes (Alexander Chudik et. all, 2019). Also, the opportunities for students to keep receiving education have been badly impacted (Unicef, 2020). Under this situation, many students have had to stop their classes and even change their future plans. Moreover, the situation of coronavirus has badly affected many schools and some of them even went to bankruptcy.
Students in different countries
The recent status of counties that have Covid-19 over control
Although many countries are still suffering from the coronavirus, some of them have the virus under control and have reopened the schools for students nowadays. With effective measurements of controlling the virus, the doctors and experts in these counties have cured almost all the coronavirus patients in their territories. For example, the government in Wu Han, the city that had the most serious COVID-19 status in China, closed the city and closed all the schools and public buildings on January 23rd, 2020 to prevent the spreading of the coronavirus (Souhu news, 2020). However, after May, the virus had been controlled, and the schools were allowed to reopen in turn, and almost all the school were reopened after September (Souhu news, 2020). China had 536 patients on November 21st, 2020 (COVID-19 query platform, 2020). In China, until July 27th, 2020, almost 20.8 million students went back to their school and the rate of the schools’ reopening was 75% (Jwview,2020). In addition, in Singapore, which had 57 patients in November 21st, 2020 (COVID-19 query platform,2020), more programs, like outdoor activities have been set to resume in schools from mid-October (CNA,2020).
Effects on students in these countries
For students in these countries, their study process might have been affected, because during the closure of the schools, some of these schools could not provide online classes for their students, or the students were not taking their studies seriously enough without their teachers’ supervision. For these students, they may need to pay more time and even use their weekends to catch up with their normal study speed. For example, in China, many schools shorten the length of holidays and use one of their weekends to improve their learning speed to ensure that they can acquire the knowledge they needed to learn during shutdown period of their schools (Bandao news, 2020). Furthermore, in some developed countries with a high coverage rate of advanced techniques, the government also provided support for school and students to learn knowledge through the internet more successfully and intuitively. For example, Singapore’s government is preparing more digitalized machines like an artificial intelligence platform that can develop a virtual tutor to help with online learning for students at universities and other schools (Kavita Chandran, 2020).
The recent status of other countries still suffering from Covid-19
Under the challenge of coronavirus, many countries like America (12,254,117 patients now), Russia (2,039,926 patients in 21 Nov. 2020), Italy (1,345,767 patients in 21 Nov. 2020) still suffer from the pandemic (Covid-19 query platform, 2020). The total number of coronavirus patient nowadays is 16,756,360 (Covid-19 query platform, 2020). So, it’s still very dangerous for students to turn back to school to study. Although some governments tried to reopen the schools, it caused more dangers to the students and teachers in the schools. For example, in America, an university called Georgia College and State University has reopened but couldn’t control the spreading of coronavirus between students. About 10% students in this university had infected by Covid-19 (Lilah Burke,2020). So, to ensure peoples’ safety, the schools of more than 90 percent of the world’s enrolled students have been closed because of the pandemic until now (Valerie Strauss,2020).
Effects on students in these countries
Because of the long closure period of these schools, many problems related to students’ studies have appeared. About 1 billion students worldwide are still staying at home instead of studying at their schools (Unicef, 2020). Moreover, some of them do not even know how to receive education without going to their schools, especially in some areas that do not have internet coverage, like Africa and many other third world countries. The internet coverage rate until December 2019 was 39.3% in Africa (Internet World Status, 2020). So, it’s very hard for local students in some countries to have online classes. Under this situation, their study procedure and efficiency may be affected a lot. So, students may even fail to go to the next grade.
The recent status of schools and other tutoring centers suffering from COVID-19
The recent status of most public schools
Globally, more than 90% schools have remain closed nowadays for the safety of their teachers and students under the COVID-19 crisis (Valerie Strauss, 2020). The compulsive closure of these schools not only influenced the students’ study procedure, but also caused many schools’ bankruptcy. Because of the lack of profit, the coronavirus cases mean some schools won’t be able to open at all (DIANA LAMBERT et al, 2020). For example, the coronavirus crisis is pushing 13 UK universities towards insolvency (Silvia Amaro, 2020).
Their method to overcome these challenges
Although it’s very hard for some schools to overcome this crisis, there are still many ways for schools to survive. The first way is through financial support from the government. Many governments all over the world have given financial subsidies for these schools to overcome the closure due COVID-19. For example, in California, more than $5 billion has been awarded to transitional public schools to support the schools’ closures and support distance learning (CALIFORNIA ALL, 2020).
Also, to maintain education for students and receive tuitions, many schools provide online classes for students, which have been quite beneficial for both the students and the schools. Online teaching and learning have been used by teachers and students on an unprecedented scale (OECD, 2020). For example, in China, during the crisis of the coronavirus, almost all the schools provided online classes for students. There were 300 million students studying online in China during the pandemic (iiMedia Research, 2020).
The recent status of other tutoring centers
Not only has COVID-19 influenced public schools but it has also destroyed many tutoring schools that provide extra curriculum classes for students. Before the pandemic, many students all around the world went to tutoring schools every day to improve their study levels. For example, in China, the total percentage of students who went to tutoring schools in 2019 was 36.7%, while the number was 70% in some big cities in China (Shandong Education,2019). The total profit of these tutoring schools was 800 billion RMB (Shandong Education,2019). However, nowadays, in most countries, going to school to have classes is dangerous and prohibited, so they could not go to these schools, and the schools cannot profit. Without both profit and the support from the government, many tutoring schools have closed due to financial crises. About 12,000 tutoring schools were bankrupt in China during the crisis of COVID-19 until April 2020 (Zhihu, 2020).
Conclusion
Under the crisis of COVID-19, both students and schools are suffering from many challenges. Although many problems still cannot be solved nowadays, with the help of technology and the financial support of governments, some of these challenges had been overcome.
