The National Telecommunications Commission approves Elon Musk’s Starlink’s registration for Philippine Entry

Elon Musk’s SpaceX is now officially entering the Philippines, as the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) announced that they had granted a certificate of registration to Starlink Internet Services Philippines, Inc., approving it as a value-added service (VAS) provider, allowing the company to access satellite systems and build and operate broadband facilities to start offering internet access services in the country.

Starlink is Elon Musk’s new satellite Internet service, launched by private aerospace company SpaceX. It is a constellation of multiple satellites that orbit the planet much closer to Earth, and is expected to offer high-speed, low-latency satellite internet service with download speeds between 100 and 200 megabits per second (Mbps).

SpaceX’s counsel, lawyer Bien Marquez, thanked the NTC for its speedy action and swift processing. This shows the government’s seriousness in addressing the connectivity needs mostly in the remote and far-flung areas in the country, where access to the internet is limited, and with the help of the recently signed law of President Rodrigo Duterte amending the Commonwealth Act No. 146, or the amended Public Service Act, which eases the restrictions on foreigners to fully own a business in the country.

Starlink’s website confirmed that the service would be available in the Philippines and is expected to roll out by the 4th quarter of 2022, making the Philippines the first nation in Southeast Asia to avail of Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite broadband service and possibly second in entire Asia, next to Japan, which will connect in the third quarter of the same year.
