What does it mean for a person to possess self-confidence?

Many studies and findings have proven that self-confidence is a quality common to most people, and it is known as one of the most important factors that a person needs to succeed. It is said that it is not a shame to be defeated, but not daring to overcome setbacks is. So, how can we avoid and prevent the obstacles in our ways in order to make maximize our success rate? The answer is self-esteem and self-confidence. A confident life will never be defeated by society, except when the person is finally exhausted and unable to fight.

Self-confidence is the cornerstone of success in life. People’s road to success must proceed step by step through the pathway of self-confidence. With self-confidence, people can take their talents to their highest potential, be what they want to be, and stick to their beliefs. In any case, the motto of a confident person is: ” I can do it. It may be difficult right now, but I firmly believe that I will achieve it in the future.”

Self-confidence can change not only the surroundings but also the person himself. A common anecdote about it is when a psychologist selected the most discounted and disliked person, a girl, from a class of students and forced her classmates to change their impressions of her. Later, all the students rushed to take care of her, show courtesy to her, and accompany her home. What happened? In less than a year, the girl came and went very well, and even her behavior was different from what it used to be. She wisely told people that she was living a new life. Indeed, she did not become another person, but she showed everyone her potential. This beauty can only be shown when we believe in ourselves and when the people around us treat us equally.

However, self-confidence is not innate, and not everyone has it. Many people’s self-confidence is very low, especially after some life tossing and having tasted the bitterness of life. Some people may feel ashamed, and some others, over time, learn to belittle themselves to prevent failure in life. This group of people believe that self-confidence is a dangerous quality. The more confident people are, the easier they rub other people the wrong way and become a target of criticism.

Others have lost their confidence since their childhood because of how their parents always scolded them for different reasons. Words of pessimism blurted by some parents, such as “Look, you fool, loser, you will be a street sweeper at best!” destroy children’s confidence. Over time, they may accept those negative images as their reality and evade the reality by telling themselves, ” I was a fool and a loser since I was a child, anyway. How can I be whimsical?”
