The Philippine Statistics Authority reported that Covid-19 was the third leading cause of death in the Philippines in the first ten months of 2021.
The figures in this report may differ from the ones released by the Department of Health (DOH). The data from Philippine Statistics Authority was based on the descriptions written on the medical certificate portion of all death certificates received, which were reviewed by local health officers, while the data from the Department of Health was collected through a surveillance system. Furthermore, COVID-19 deaths in this release were confirmed and probable cases as of registration, whereas the data released by the Department of Health (DOH) was deaths from confirmed cases only.
The Philippine Statistics Authority said COVID-19 “virus identified’ accounted for 9.7 percent, meaning 51,514 people died from January-October 2021, jumping to the third leading cause of fatalities from having ranked 14th in 2020.
Among 17 regions in the country, the National Capital Region registered the highest number of deaths due to COVID-19, with 9.98 thousand. CALABARZON ranked second with 6.08 thousand deaths, Central Luzon in the third spot with 4.30 thousand deaths, while Cagayan Valley was ranked fourth with 1.20 thousand deaths. On the other hand, Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) reported the least number of registered COVID-19 deaths, with only 11 cases.
In the National Capital Region (NCR), Quezon City has the highest number of deaths due to COVID-19, with 2.18 thousand deaths, followed by the City of Manila and City of Pasig with 1.53 thousand, 1.01 thousand COVID-19 deaths, respectively.
On the list, the top cause of death in the country is ischaemic heart disease, with 56.76 thousand deaths. It is followed by cerebrovascular diseases, coming in second with 30.80 thousand deaths. Neoplasms, commonly known as “cancer,” were in fourth place behind COVID-19, with 27.34 thousand deaths. Also included in the top ten causes of death are diabetes mellitus, hypertensive diseases, pneumonia, COVID-19 virus not identified, other heart diseases, and chronic lower respiratory diseases.
