From Ancient Cuju to Modern FIFA

First mention of football which involved kicking the ball was written in the military service in China under the name Cuju in the 3rd, 2nd centuries BC. This is the earliest game. A game called Cuju was played in square space with a circular ball made of stitched leather. There was either fur or feathers inside. This is called to be the first version of Association Football. Few years later, an unkind version of Cuju was delivered to Japan during the Asuka era. The Japanese version of Cuju was called Kemari. If the game was delivered to another country, it could change name, or play. I thought that many games these days could be a delivered game in the past. I was amazed that the Old Chinese game Cuju influenced modern football. I am also surprised that even games in the 3rd, 2nd centuries can influence these days. Modern-day football was made in Great Britain. In the 1800s, England made two versions of the same sport with different rules. The two versions were called differently. Also it followed different codes. First version was named Rugby Football, and the second one was named Association Football. I think Association Football is more interesting because it is more popular nowdays. In 1863, from the Football Association, the first association was established in England. It was established to make a single, major set of rules and to control how football was played with its members. The Football Association wrote the “Football Laws,” the first important set of rules for Association Football, and it came to be called “soccer” or “Football.” I think that regulations increased the sport’s global popularity because they made football and other games more gentle and kind. In 1904, FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) was made in Paris, France. The earliest members(founding members) were France, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Switzerland.  These countries developed into the global governing body of the sport. I think these founding members influenced these day’s football popularity. Founding members in FIFA is one of the powerful country on earth such as UK or France. (Sumu,2022)

Football Rules

There are many rules in football. Let’s find out. The first rule of football is ‘The Field of Play.’This law manages the size and markings in the soccer field called a football pitch or a football field. The field can use both natural grass and human-made grass, apart from recreational matches that sometimes do it in the dirt ground. I think this is very important because if court’s grass is very rough, it can make the player’s condition worse. The court is divided into two exact halves by a line parallel to the goal line and marks the playing space. It needs to mark a circle with 9.15 meters around the court. The line which can touch has to be 90-120 meters long and the length is also the same. The lines which show the goal must be 45-90 meters wide and also in width. I think standardizing the court and marks is important because if we don’t, it becomes unfair. This situation can also make football’s fame worse. The second law is about the ball and players. The law about balls shows the specific size, shape, and material comparison. In this law, they standard diameter of a five size ball. Has to be 22cm around and 68-70 cm circumference. For players, there must be 11 players each. And one of the 11 players must be the goalkeeper. And a team has to have at least seven players to be considered complete. In this law, it standards that it has to be 11 players on each team, but more players on each team can make football more fun because it increases the player’s touch more often. Ten players except the goalkeeper must hit their ball with their legs or feet. They are not allowed to touch the ball with their hands or arms. And there are some of the most famous rules in football. It is called ‘offside.’ I think this rule increased the level of football to play. With no offside, attackers will be too easy to score a goal. This makes defenders feel annoyed or bored, so these rules make football trickier and fun to play.  An offside rule helps defenders and makes their attackers trickier to attack. If a player’s body, such as hands and arms, is in the other team’s half and closer to the goal line before the ball, it becomes an offside. Getting offside is not an offense, but an advantage is given to the player who did an offside. This can be found guilty of an offside. I hope football rules should continue to evolve. I think VAR rules on football made football more popular because it has tension on it. And that rule was created because football rules keep evolving. That’s why I hope football rules should evolve.
