What is TESOL and why should you take it?

You frequently see the acronym TESOL when you search for certificate options that will allow you to teach English in your locality or another country.

But what is exactly is TESOL?

TESOL is the acronym for Teaching English to the Speakers of Other Languages.

TESOL is an internationally accepted certificate allows you to teach English to students whose mother tongue is another language and whose environment is detached from the use of English.

What benefits can you get from a TESOL course?

1. You can learn different strategies and methodologies for teaching English. English teaching requires techniques. You cannot just show up in class and wing it.

In a TESOL certification course, you will be taught how to design lessons using different forms of media, such as videos, audio recordings, songs, print media, and other materials that merge grammar and vocabulary lessons with speaking, writing, reading, and listening skill development.

2. You can level up your creativity in teaching. Let’s admit it: Not all students, especially the young ones, are motivated to learn English, and not everybody learns at the same pace. Different students have different circumstances. Some learn English because they are required to. Some do it just so that they have something to do. Some learn fast; others learn slowly.

Through TESOL, you will gain an understanding of various student situations and various approaches to them so when you encounter different students, you are equipped with knowledge and skills to deal with them.

3. TESOL can open up career opportunities in other countries for you. English is the universal language, but did you know that out of the 7.8 billion people on Earth, only about 400 million speak English as their first language? With globalization, imagine how many English teachers are needed to teach English to the remaining billions of people. When you have a globally recognized TESOL certification, such as the one coming from Concordia International University, doors to the English-teaching industry will open for you.

4. If you are a student or a graduate wanting to pursue further education abroad, you can use your TESOL certification to progress to a bachelor’s or master’s degree in the UK. Concordia International University, through its Pathway Program, has helped many students get accepted in UK universities that credit Concordia-issued TESOL certification.
