Introduction
In modern society, people get a lot of influence from celebrities in areas such as fashion, politics, and social media. This influence has some positive and negative impacts on people, but is that a good thing or a bad thing?
What’s a celebrity?
Basically, a celebrity is someone, usually in the entertainment industry, who is known to a very large number of people and has a huge impact on society. Being a celebrity and just being popular have their own pros and cons. While there surely are some benefits to being famous, there are also a number of disadvantages (princesswithapen, 2012).
Positive influence of celebrities on health issues
Some celebrities have a positive influence on body image discussions. For instance, the singer Lorde called out her own Photoshopped images on Twitter. She pointed out that one photo shows her with “flawless” skin, while the other is real. She tweeted, “It’s okay to have flaws.” Other celebrities, such as Rihanna, Beyonce, Melissa McCarthy, and Jennifer Lawrence, have voiced their opposition to the ideals of beauty that the entertainment and fashion industries have promoted (Monroe, 2018).
Negative influence of celebrities on drug issues
Celebrities are responsible for dealing with their power, but very often, they misuse that power to send out messages that hurt the feelings of many people.
For example, G-Eazy—an American rapper who is famous among the youth for his lyrics about sex, drugs, and money, as well as love, grief, and the pressures of being celebrities—had been arrested recently for cocaine possession and attempted assault but was released on bail and able to continue touring. Such acts promote drug abuse among the youth and show a generally wrong and careless model (Deshmukh, 2018).
Conclusion
In conclusion, being a celebrity has a huge impact on societies, and for better or worse, people get a lot of influence from them. However, ultimately, it is important to think and act on your own initiative and not be influenced too much by celebrities.
