Palawan continues to reap world recognition, this time, as the “Most Desirable Island” by the 21st Wanderlust Travel Awards in the United Kingdom.
“The scenery here [Palawan] is heaven on earth, with sparkling waters and white sand beaches. One of the most photographed sites is Kayangan, a dazzling freshwater lake with spectacular rock formations above and below the surface,” Wanderlust wrote.
Aside from Palawan’s win, the country, through the Department of Tourism, also placed 6th out of hundreds of special entries in the Wanderlust Sustainability Initiative Category for its Dive7 Program. Christina Frasco, the Philippines’ tourism secretary, expressed her gratitude to the magazine readers for their support and love for the country.
“These awards reflect the efforts to revive the tourism industry that are well underway especially because of the Marcos administration’s thrust towards prioritizing tourism development. Rest assured that we will continue with our mission to herald the Philippines and the Filipino brand to the world and to ensure the continued sustainability of our islands,” Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco said. These new awards added to the long record of recognition the country has earned, even during the time of the COVID-19 crisis.
In June this year, the Philippines was named by Conde Nast Travel as part of the Forty Most Beautiful Countries in the World specifically because of the Cave of Puerto Princesa Underground River, the uniform Chocolate Hills of Bohol, and the breathtaking views of Banaue and Cordilleras Rice Terraces. In the following month, the renowned Travel + Leisure magazine also recognized the country’s tourist magnets Boracay, Palawan, and Cebu as part of the 25 best islands in the World.
In September, the Philippines was named Asia’s leading dive and beach destination in the region and the historic Walled City of Intramuros in Manila as Asia’s leading tourist attraction.
More than 1.9 million foreign tourists have arrived in the Philippines since it reopened leisure travel in February this year.
