Why do Filipinos need to drink milk at any age?

June 1 is the annual World Milk Day; however, it is unbeknownst to most Filipinos. They were unaware of this because Filipinos are not milk drinkers, as explained by the National President of the Nutritionists-Dietitians Association of the Philippines (NDAP), Zenaida Velasco.

Although milk is a complete food packed with 18 of the 22 essential nutrients the body needs, Filipinos generally ignore it, which is why much of the population lacks the right amount of calcium in their bodies.

A study by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (FNRI-DOST) in 2006 found that only 57% of Filipinos meet the recommended daily allowance for calcium. Fifteen years later, this number has not improved.

Having supported the global World Milk Day and launched the “Kasambuhay sa Kalusugan ng Pamilyang Pilipino” program in partnership with Velasco’s NDAP, Nestle Philippines believes that, because malnutrition continues to be a major public health concern in the country, it is time for all Filipino families to join the celebration, raise their glasses of milk, and toast to a healthy, nourished and happy life.

The organization is one of the company’s key partners in helping equip local nutritionists and dietitians with proper information on nutrition to guide Filipinos in their health and wellness journey.

Nestle is committed to going beyond the annual June 1 celebration to help the organization and health experts bring awareness and importance of this superfood to the daily diet of every age.

In short, milk-drinking advocates here and around the world are emphasizing that milk is not just for children. To ensure long-term health, parents, teenagers, young adults, and even grandparents should drink milk on a daily basis.

Drinking one to two glasses of milk per day can provide numerous benefits to Filipinos at various stages of life and with varying needs.
