More Filipinos trust news, but many are also avoiding it

The Digital News Report 2022 released by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism has shown the overall trust in news among Filipinos has risen to 37%.

However, the higher trust level is also accompanied by declining trust ratings of individual news brands, with 47% of Filipino adults falling interested and often turning away from the news.

Reasons for the avoidance include getting put off by “too much” news, especially too much coverage of COVID-19 and politics, as well as news that affects their mood and belief that some content was biased and unworthy.

Digital News Report 2022 was based on a poll of 93,432 people, of which a total of 2,023 were adult Filipinos. Respondents were from 46 media markets on six continents polled online between January 18 and February 2.

However, for this year, the country’s trust score still falls below the global average of 42%, ranking fourth lowest among the 11 markets in the Asia-Pacific region. The Philippines started at a low 27% in 2020 when it was first included in the annual study.

GMA Network still has the highest trust score among 15 brands included in the survey, with 70% who find it trustworthy, followed by Manila Bulletin (66%). The Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI) and Super Radyo DZBB tied for the third spot (65%), displacing the Philippine Star (64%), now at fourth rank.

In general, Filipinos expressed their greatest interest in local news, followed by news about the coronavirus, climate change and the environment, and politics.
