The Philippines jumps to the 33rd spot in the COVID-19 Recovery ranking by Tokyo-based news magazine Nikkei Asia.
In May, the Philippines and Vietnam logged their best performances as both countries managed to ease restrictions while keeping infections low, Nikkei Asia said in its May 31 report.
As for 2021, the Philippines also made a huge jump from 103rd place in October to 57th place in December. By placing in the 33rd spot in May, the country is now leading over 80 other countries, including Switzerland (38), Israel (44), Japan (53), the United Kingdom (58), Canada (60), Australia and Hong Kong (71), New Zealand (75), Singapore (79), United States (89), and China (93).
The index evaluates countries’ and regions’ infection management, social mobility, and vaccine rollouts. “The higher the ranking, the closer a place is to recovery,” the report said.
Nikkei Asia also noted the consistent decline in daily cases in the country. Over the Philippines, based on the Department of Health weekly case bulletin, the daily case average has been below 200 in the past week, with no confirmed deaths reported.
Meanwhile, Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Francisco Duque III welcomed the improved standing of the country, saying that the “remarkable recovery reported by independent external observers was being balanced by safety protocols managed by the Department of Health and other partners and can be attributed to good compliance with minimum public health standards and country’s vaccination rollout.”
Nikkei Asia sourced its figures from Our World in Data; Google COVID-19 Community Mobility Reports; Oxford COVID-19 Government Response Tracker, Cirium, and Nikkei Asia Research.
