On April 6, a couple of days after the United Nations released an alarming report on the state of the global emergency, more than 1,200 scientists and a small group of climate activists gathered in Pershing Square in downtown L.A. to demand faster action to address the crisis.
A group of climate activists walked briskly toward the JP Morgan Chase Building on Wednesday afternoon. The four men, including climate scientist Peter Calmus, science educator Allan Chornak, physicist Greg Spooner, and engineer Eric Gill, chained and glued themselves to the bank’s front doors in protest of the bank’s investment in oil, coal, and gas projects. Some scientists were arrested. The scientists’ day of climate action was an expression of desperation over the fact that, despite all the evidence gathered over the past decades, it is still “business as usual” for governments and corporations.
Meanwhile, in the Philippines, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) strengthened the partnership with the Ministry of the Environment of Japan (MOEJ) in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions toward “decarbonized” society and “Asia Zero emissions community.”
DENR Secretary Jim Sapulna said during the Philippines-Japan bilateral Environment Policy Dialogue in March that it serves as an avenue for DENR and MOEJ to partner in the protection against the impact of climate change.
The Philippines, as an archipelago, is one of the most vulnerable countries to the effects of climate change. It has faced several typhoons and was recently hit by yet another destructive storm, tropical storm “Agaton,” which left the country with deaths and massive flooding that caused multibillion-peso damage to homes, agriculture, and infrastructure. “Partnership with Japan in terms of technology and know-how on measures to mitigate climate change is vital at this time,” Sapulna said.
MOEJ Vice Minister Tokutaro Nakai said that the agency is deepening its cooperation with DENR through strategies and initiatives on Fluorocarbons Life Cycle Management and Joint Crediting Mechanism.
In a joint statement, the DENR and the MOEJ agreed to take actions to tackle climate change and will work together on the advancement of the life cycle management of fluorocarbons in the Philippines and Japan to help contribute to the former’s hydrofluorocarbons emissions reduction.
The government assured that the Philippines remains committed to the projected greenhouse gas emission reduction and avoidance of 75 percent, and President Rodrigo Duterte called on the industrialized, rich countries to do more to help poorer countries in the global south that are bearing the brunt of climate change effects, yet have contributed relatively little to the problem.
