Philippine government to donate COVID-19 vaccine doses to Myanmar and Papua New Guinea

The Philippine government is coordinating with Myanmar and Papua New Guinea to finalize the arrangements for the donation of COVID-19 vaccines to the two countries and now preparing the total number of doses that will be donated. Legal documentation processes are also underway, and they continue looking for other countries with low vaccination coverage as the Philippines’ current supply is stable.

It is the initiative of the government to donate some of the vaccine stock nearing expiration as a way to resolve the issue of vaccine equity raised by the World Health Organization, but the government assures that the country’s vaccine donations will not affect its current supply and that it will remain sufficient for the country’s need.

This planned donation came after Presidential Adviser for Entrepreneurship Jose Maria Concepcion said the government should use its 27 million unused vaccines in its inventory before it expires in July. Most of the vaccines that are nearing expiration are a mix of donated vaccines from other countries and procured by national and local government units and the private sector, and donations from the COVAX facility.

Amid the expected expiration of millions of vaccine doses in the next few months, President Rodrigo Duterte ordered a house-to-house anti-COVID-19 vaccination program, particularly in the countryside.

The Department of Health (DOH) and the National Task Force against COVID-19 (NFT) were working with the manufacturers to extend the shelf life of the vaccines based on updated scientific data, such as updated stability studies.
