Foreign Minister Cho attends UN Security Council briefing

Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Tae-yul attended the United Nations Security Council briefing marking the second anniversary of the war in Ukraine, held at the UN headquarters on February 23 (New York time), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced.

Foreign Minister Cho reaffirmed the Korean government’s consistent position that the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of Ukraine should be respected, and stressed that Russia’s armed invasion of Ukraine is a clear violation of the UN Charter and international law.

Additionally, Foreign Minister Cho explained the Korean government’s efforts to end the war in Ukraine and restore peace. He stated that under the “Ukraine Peace and Solidarity Initiative” announced during President Yoon Suk-yeol’s visit to Ukraine in July 2023, the Korean government will continue various forms of support for Ukraine – a contribution worth $2.3 billion in total.

Foreign Minister Cho also mentioned that Korea will continue to actively participate in international efforts for the cessation of the war in Ukraine and the restoration of peace, as shown in its recent participation of the “Multi-agency Donor Coordination Platform for Ukraine (MDCP).”

Furthermore, Foreign Minister Cho pointed out that military cooperation between Russia and North Korea constitutes a violation of UN Security Council resolutions and undermines the global non-proliferation regime, and urged Russia and North Korea to comply with relevant Security Council resolutions.

This briefing marked the first official Security Council meeting attended by the Foreign Minister of Korea since Korea assumed its membership of the UN Security Council for the 2024-25 term. It served as an opportunity to raise international awareness of Korea’s role and contribution to promote international peace and security.
