Recently, at Udayana University located in Bali, Indonesia, BIPAS (Bali International Program on Asian Studies) students got together for a cooking activity where they got to learn how to prepare and create traditional the Balinese food ‘sate lilit’ with local students. Sate lilit is a variant of satay in Indonesia and originates from Balinese cuisine. The base of it is minced meat, but the choice of meat is really flexible. People use chicken, fish, beef, pork, duck, etc. The word ‘lilit’ roughly translates to “wrap around.” This comes from the meat being typically wrapped around the skewers. It is traditional to use lemongrass stalks as skewers instead of the typical bamboo skewers you see more of today. However, in the video, the students created a smaller version of sate lilit using popsicle sticks for the purpose of learning how to make this popular dish.
This activity is one of many fun group activities at Udayana University. BIPAS students have many opportunities throughout each semester for fun activities like this. Udayana is ranked #9 in Indonesia, ranked #1 in Bali, and top 15% in Asian universities. The BIPAS program is great for university students who are interested in Indonesia and/or South-East Asia. Studying abroad can provide a unique opportunity for those who wish for a unique, exotic environment while also getting to know people from all over the world and expanding their knowledge of different cultures.
Through the collaboration between us at Concordia and Asia Exchange, studying abroad in Bali is entirely possible through our Concordia Bali program. Students can apply to study at Udayana University, the school that hosted this cooking activity, or Warmadewa University, another great choice for studying abroad.
