Face-to-face classes resume in the Philippines for SY 2022-2023

After two school years without face-to-face classes, public schools’ empty rooms and corridors in the Philippines will once again be filled with students as the Department of Education (DepEd) formally opens the School Year 2022-2023 on Monday, August 22, 2022.

As of August 22, DepEd said there are 28,035,042 enrolled learners nationwide for this school year.

Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Z. Duterte said in her speech at the 2022 National School Opening Day Program at the Dinalupihan Elementary School in Bataan that the start of in-person classes was a “victory” for the learners.

“Today, we acknowledge that this is a victory for basic education. The resumption of in-person learning today is a great achievement for Filipino youth,” she added.

Schools that started their in-classroom setup have implemented safety guidelines, including the mandatory wearing of face masks, temperature checks, and proper sanitation. Handwashing stations are among the facilities in schools in compliance with the health and safety protocols for the safe reopening of classes amid the coronavirus pandemic. Likewise, police assistance desks are also on post near schools to maintain security on educational premises.

The Department of Education has set a three-month transition period for public and private schools, recognizing the need to prepare the schools, learners, and teachers for the reintroduction of in-classroom learning.

Schools can implement a learning delivery modality of their choice from August 22 to October 31. They may choose to implement full face-to-face, full distance learning, or blended learning, as stated in DepEd guidelines.

Starting on November 2, all schools that offer basic education should have transitioned to full face-to-face classes, DepEd said.
