The Philippines remains at ‘very low risk’ for COVID-19 while neighbouring countries experience ‘severe outbreaks’

The Philippines has remained under the “very low risk” category for COVID-19 as neighbouring countries in East and Southeast Asia have experienced a surge in infections, independent monitoring group OCTA Research said on Thursday, March 24.

In a tweet, OCTA Research fellow Dr. Guido David explained that the data, as of March 22, showed that the Philippines’ average daily attack rate (ADAR) decreased to 0.43, with a seven-day average of 478 cases. The country’s growth rate in new cases from the previous week compared to the current week also went down to 15%.

OCTA further reported that Timor Leste, Taiwan, Cambodia, Myanmar and China were also at “very low risk,” with an average daily attack rate ranging from 0.16 to 0.71.

However, South Korea, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Brunei were all under the “severe” category. South Korea has the highest average daily attack rate among East Asian countries at 778.50.

Malaysia eased from the “severe” category to “very high,” with an average daily attack rate of 69.22. Japan and Thailand also fell under the “very high” category with an average daily attack rate of 33.18 and 35.32, respectively.

Moreover, Laos recorded 17.27 an average daily attack rate, placing it under “high” risk for COVID-19, while Indonesia was under “moderate” classification with 3a .08 average daily attack rate.

The Department of Health (DOH) said it had not yet detected the hybrid coronavirus mutation “Deltacron” in the Philippines and retained the country’s alert level at 1. Under this alert level, intrazonal and interzonal travel is allowed regardless of age and comorbidities. All establishments, persons, or activities are also allowed to operate, work, or be undertaken at full on-site or seating capacity, provided its continuous observance of minimum public health standards.
