In Ontario, Dr. Kieran Moore, Chief Medical Officer of Health, confirmed that the COVID-19 mask requirements in Ontario would lift in most indoor settings by March 21, 2022 and in British Columbia, Dr. Bonnie Henry, Chief Medical Officer of Health, announced that the mask ordinance would be discontinued as of Friday, March 11, 2022 while the vaccine card program will end Friday, April 8. Both Provinces made such a decision to intensify a balanced response towards the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. In effect, wearing a mask is no longer required in places like schools, gyms, bars, restaurants, and movie theatres. However, in the interest of public health and safety, both the provincial governments stated that individuals could continue to wear a mask if they prefer.
Ontario released the “end-of-mask mandate” after ending their proof of vaccination requirement in entering non-essential business establishments on March 1. At that time, the province also lifted the capacity limits and physical distancing requirements.
Also, the mandatory vaccination policies will end on March 14, 2022 for Ontario and April 8, 2022 for British Columbia as cases and hospitalizations have dropped to December 2021 levels, before the Omicron-fueled wave hit. The new Government response announced since both Ontario and B.C. are one of the most vaccinated jurisdictions in the world, with 88.3% for Ontario and 90.7% for B.C.
